Cealy Jane Rogers Conner
holding grandson, Ray Allen Shubert
with her son, George Dewey Conner and Ethel Conner
My father-in-law, Ray Shubert, the baby in this picture, was born in September 1917, leading me to believe the photo was taken around 1918. George was fifteen years old in 1920 on the Lenoir City, Loudon Co., Tennessee US census, so he was probably thirteen. Sweet Ethel in her precious hat was listed as eleven on the 1920 census, so would have been nine years old here. Ethel married a man named Thomas and later lived in Saint Louis near her son, Clarence, where she died. My father-in-law often talked about her and his childhood memories of her.

Family handwritten notes that were mailed to me by Alyce Shubert Proaps had the following information:
George Dewey Conner
Born - April 22, 1905
Died - April 29, 1931
at the early age of 26 years years of age.
Ray Allen Shubert
September 08, 1917 - Lenoir City, Tennessee
January 17, 2003 - Nashville, Tennessee

The picture of eleven-year old Ray is striking. His eyes seem a mixture of anger and intelligent knowing. Did he have that look in his eyes later?
Thanks for that observation, "Free". He always said he was a willful boy and always got in trouble. Check out the post with his wife as an adult. He was a handsome man.

Thanks for stopping by, Betsy, and trying to leave you comments, too. I'm sorry it didn't "take"! Maybe next time!
I recently corresponded with a cousin of my mother's who remembers Aunt Ceal. Do you know of anyone who might have a picture of her father Jessie Rogers? My great grandfather, William Anderson Rogers, was a brother of Cealy Jane. Paul was able to get me a picture of Will and I sent it to my mother's cousin who had never seen a picture of her grandfather. My mother passed away on February 4th and I was glad to be able to show her the picture as well as she had never seen what he looked like either.
No, Bethy, I don't know of a picture of their father, Jessie. But if I can find one, I will definitely post it and if you will you will leave you email address, send it to you. The link to your name didn't work.
Thanks for stopping by.

I signed up with Ancestry.ca/com in the spring and it's amazing the amount of family I have.
Happy blogoversary :)
these are fascinating photos. I think Ray looks more confident than angry-- like he knows who he is and doesn't need anyone to assure him he's "ok." Thanks for following the love story that's unfolding at Family Archaeologist.
